In samenwerking met de VU is het ISS een game via Cyberdam aan het ontwikkelen die als doel heeft het aanleren van informatievaardigheden en het vinden van gratis wetenschappelijke informatie op het internet. De game is bedoeld voor buitenlandse studenten Sociale Wetenschappen. In de game komen de volgende onderwerpen aan de orde: select research subject (er zijn 7 probleemstellingen waaruit gekozen kan worden), literature search, how to formulate a search query, how to select keywords, choosing search tools (om gratis wetenschappelijke informatie op het internet te vinden), en tenslotte: evaluation (criteria). Inmiddels zijn we in de implementatiefase. In april wordt de game getest met een aantal studenten van de VU en het ISS. Dan volgt de evaluatie en per 1 mei moet de game opgeleverd worden. 

Op dit ogenblik wordt de laatste hand gelegd aan de verbouwing van de bibliotheek. We zien uit naar het moment dat we een eigen instructie-ruimte ter beschikking zullen hebben. Dit stelt ons in staat onze diensten flexibeler aan te bieden (on demand).

Verder zijn we druk bezig met het vullen van de course outline Information Literacy voor het komende academisch jaar.

Goed nieuws! Met ingang van september 2008 - nieuw academisch jaar - is Information Literacy and IT Skills officieel opgenomen in de 'academic calendar'. In onze electronische leeromgeving (Moodle - open source) staan wij vermeld onder general courses met eigen course nummer 2106. Studenten zijn verplicht alle onderdelen te volgen, maar kunnen er vooralsnog geen studiepunten mee verdienen.

IT skills:

Alle studenten doen een ECDL test (European Computer Driver License). Aan de hand van de uitkomsten wordt bepaald welke IT cursussen worden gegeven, aan wie en op welk niveau. De studenten met goede resultaten wordt gevraagd of zij bijscholinscursussen op zich willen nemen. Naast ECDL wordt tevens Endnote, MindMapping en Atlas/Ti (kwalitatieve analyse) aangeboden. Voor de research paper is een template ontwikkeld. Studenten dienen vanaf dit jaar hun thesis digitaal - in het aangewezen format - aan te leveren. Er wordt een workshop gegeven ter ondersteuning.

Het niveau blijkt zeer wisselend. Opvallend is dat studenten afkomstig uit landen met een slechte IT infrastructuur doorgaans wel kunnen browsen, maar met emailprogramma's slecht uit de voeten kunnen. Gebrek aan ervaring!

Informatievaardigheden:

IL 1 (september 2008): uitgebreide library tour en uitleg van de structuur van de bibliotheek-website (introductie virtuele bibliotheek landschap). Dan wordt ook dieper ingegaan op het gebruik van de ISS catalogus, Picarta, OAlster, Focuss, Open Access Journals, Google Books, Google Scholar en WorldCat. Bovendien worden e-journals en bibliografische databases kort aangestipt.

IL 2 (januari 2009): uitleg over opzet en gebruik zoekstrategieen.

IL 3 (april/mei 2009): uitleg over het zoeken en evalueren van informatie met behulp van a) bibliografische databanken en b) het internet.

Al deze sessies worden in groepen van max. 20 personen (maximum aantal plaatsen in computerlokalen) gegeven.

Half november aanstaande wordt er een begin gemaakt met de verbouwing van onze bibliotheek. Wie geinteresseerd is kan hier een kijkje nemen. Om meer studieplaatsen te realiseren is ervoor gekozen om het merendeel van de gebonden tijdschriften af te stoten en te vervangen door elektronische. Dit noopt ons om extra sessies e-journals in te lassen.

Vanaf voorjaar 2009 beschikken we over een klein klaslokaal in de bibliotheek zelf. We kunnen dan gemakkelijker en sneller inspringen op wensen van studenten.

We zijn niet toegekomen aan het uitrollen van ISS Information Literacy Assessment. Wordt vervolgd.

Students at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) are admitted on academic, language and job experience criteria, but originate from many different countries and organizations, with different access to internet, automated library systems or computers. Students are expected to be competent in most common IT and Information Literacy tools, but upon arrival show distinct differences in experience and competency levels.

Hence ISS embarked on a quality improvement programme for Information and IT Skills. The ISS programme is characterized by

• Information literacy and IT assessment

• Remedial course offering

• Involvement of senior year students

The objective of the programme is to bring all students at the same minimum level at an early stage of their study programme. This is believed to enhance group dynamics and collective academic skills.

Participating in the skills assessment provides students with an immediate diagnosis of their Information Literacy and IT skills. The assessment leads to concrete training requirements and a training programme in the first term will cater for the required training needs.

In view of the limited human resources available for quality improvement in Information Literacy and IT skills, senior year students are involved in remedial IL & IT workshops. Some ISS students have didactical training, others strong motivation to help the next generation of students.

For IT Skills assessment, the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) is a formalized system that is readily available. ECDL has training materials as well as online testing facilities from diagnostic test, exam and full certification. For the objective of ISS, the diagnostic test is the appropriate tool.

 

For information literacy no such ready, commercially available diagnostic testing is available. By consequence, this would result in a ‘one-programme-for-all’ training, irrespective of strengths and weaknesses of the ISS students. To overcome this handicap, it was decided to involve an intern with an Information Management (IDM) background to assist in integrating information literacy in the ISS curriculum. Part of the assignment resulted in a set of diagnostic questions that together form a diagnostic test for information literacy.

A comprehensive guideline on ‘Information Literacy Best Practices’ can be found at the American Library Association – Association of College & Research Libraries ACRL . The guideline assumes a wide involvement and support of library and academic staff, as well as adequate staffing levels for information literacy. These may not be present under all circumstances, but the principles suggested for information literacy development were found to be helpful and are reflected in the choice of questions.

 

The ISS Information Literacy assessment comprises a set of 22 questions, some of which have several sub questions. All questions have multiple choice answers, so that use can be made of on-line survey tools NetQuestionnaires.

The assessment starts by asking on familiarity with IT and Information Literacy phenomena, assesses self awareness of library skills and general information literacy knowledge. A number of questions check the understanding of library terminology, the research concepts and definitions. Next the assessment addresses questions on search techniques, practical research skills that relate to library use and values that are important in referencing and correct acknowledgements of the work of others. A set of 10 true/false questions test knowledge on search engines.

ISS intends to so the pilot run early 2008. Hopefully this will provide us with the information about the suitability of the questions and its usefulness to tailor the information literacy training. In 2008, it is hoped that an adjusted set of questions can then presented to the students.

Er ligt een verzoek vanuit het instituut om de ideale situatie te schetsen van de plaats van informatievaardigheden in het geheel van de academische vaardigheden en de plaats daarvan in het curriculum. Rogier is in de afrondende fase van zijn stage rondom de integratie van informatievaardigheden in het curriculum. De volgende keer zal hij uitgebreider verslag doen.

ISS wil stevig inzetten op het aanleren van informatievaardigheden in een academische setting. Met een aantal medewerkers aanwezig om van de ervaringen van anderen te profiteren.

Stagiaire gaat een onderzoek doen naar integratie van informatievaardighedenonderwijs in het curriculum van ISS. Het instituut is sterk in beweging. Er moeten meer betalende studenten komen; de opleiding moet geaccrediteerd worden etc.

Saskia Scheffer en Lidwien Lamboo (ISS): verzorgen op kleine schaal cursussen. Willen aan informatievaardigheden meer aandacht aan gaan besteden. Komen “de kunst afkijken”.

Maurik Mietes (Walaeus LUMC): Cursusaanbod actief onder gebruikers onder de aandacht gebracht d.m.v. folder en het intranet. Goed resultaat. Cursussen zijn “overschreven”. Er is een webcursus voor Pubmed ontwikkeld (http://www.lumc.nl/1060/webinstructie1/start.htm)
